The In the Dead of Winter festival is an acoustic based festival that will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada annually on the last weekend of January. The goal of the festival is to bring a diverse group of acoustic musicians together to not only perform but to also meet one another in a professional environment. The festival aims to showcase the diversity of acoustic music in the Atlantic Region, Canada, and the United States. A dramatic reading of a searing, personal account of bombing of Gaza

This performance piece for three voices is adapted from a diary kept during the Israeli assault on Gaza in December 2008 into January 2009. The diarist is Khulood Ghanem, a 27 year-old woman living in Khan Younis in central Gaza. Written in Arabic, the first seven days were translated into rough but clear English by the diarist.

This adaptation employs half the diary text for those seven days. Interspersed are excerpts selected by Mr. Mast from published reports issued during the last year by respected information sources or human rights organizations.

On January 12, Haiti was hit with an earthquake 7.0 on the Richter scale, leaving possibly 200,000 dead and 3 million affected. Much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, is now living in makeshift camps with their water, food, and health at risk. While many countries around the world responded with aid, the US and Canada also quickly deployed troops.
This talk will discuss current events and press coverage in the context of the past decade of Western policy towards Haiti, as well as the prospects for constructive relief and solidarity work.

Justin Podur is Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at York University and a member of the Pueblos en Camino Collective. He visited Haiti in 2005 to study the UN occupation and the government after the 2004 coup.

Dan Freeman-Maloy is a Toronto-based activist and writer. He studied Canadian media coverage of the 2004 Haiti coup and has written for ZNet and other publications.

Since 2005, the people of Bil'in, a farming village in the West Bank, have been demonstrating non-violently against the ever-expanding illegal Israeli settlements and the separation wall which encroaches on and divides their land. The village has organized weekly protests with active participation from both Israeli and international peace activists and has become an internationally celebrated symbol of non-violent resistance.

The Israeli occupation forces have been trying to destroy the resistance with a series of night raids targeting the leaders of the village, as well as ordinary residents as young as 14 years old.

One of the people arrested, Abdallah Abu Rahmah, a schoolteacher from Bil'in wrote from his prison: No army, no prison and no wall can stop us.
We will be there in solidarity with the people of Bil'in and the Palestinian people in their quest for human dignity and self-determination- Palestinians, Jews and others. We say as well we refuse to be enemies.

February 5th 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of the non-violent action in Bil'in and we will be celebrating this on that day by having a lively action in front of the Israeli consulate at 180 Bloor St W. From 5 to 6pm.

An exploration of loss and gain, of taking away and of picking up, can we ever really reclaim the things lost to us before being born into this world? Using stop-frame animation, digital images and digital video, the ebb and flow of language and culture as witnessed by a young anishinaabe man comes to the fore, John Hupfield is Becoming Unwritten.

John Hupfield is a writer, filmmaker and member of the hip hop-spoken word collective Red Slam. Born of mixed Dutch/English/Anishinaabe heritage and a member of Wasauksing First Nation, Hupfield uses new media - digital video, animation, sound/music software - to situate himself in the world and engage society with the agency of his indigenous roots. Recently completing a New Media Residency at OBORO in partnership with NIMAC, Hupfield has screened work at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto and the Weeneebeg Film Festival in Moose Factory. His shorts Clear Cut and Birch Bark were both selected for imagineNATIVEs Northern Tour in 2006 and 2009.

Curatorial Statement:

“In this work Devine remodels the act of ‘writing home’ into an actualization of her correspondence with home, specifically Serpent River. Through photographs, sound, and impressions cast in glass, the artist presents her home, replete in texture and history. Writing and text have always figured in Devine’s practice; words and their meanings, their ‘look’ on the surface of the paper akin to the stitching of red thread on a white surface. The stitches become legible as memory and the handwritten letters are missives to her place in this landscape. Each of the components in this body of work is indicative of the immersive process the artist employs with her material and medium. In this way “Writing Home” merges absence and presence… words become threads and the rock transformed into the lens of glass remains the rock.”

“Drawing with and from rock, Devine gives us privy to a conversation of human geography. This is writing and this is home.”

Artist Statement:

“This work began on the rocks of my childhood home. Driving west from Sudbury on Highway 17, tracing the great spine of Lake Huron and crossing the La Cloche Range of ancient mountains, you come into the land of the Ojibwa; Laurentia. You cross over the ancient precipitous place where two continents noisily mated eons ago. And if you are on foot, you wander where their roots remain, exposed in secret places; the trusses and ligatures of the earth. Laurentia.

The rocks tell a story ages old.

Geologists and prospectors saw and read it early on and gouged fathom-deep pits in answer, looking for rare earths and minerals. Everywhere you see their restless scratches. Even as the drawings and peckings, the noble stories of the old Ojibwa, fade and expire under their feet.

The work in this exhibition was created in response to Sandy Wabageshik, Michel Mitch, Andrew Blackbird, William Blackbird (PeTaw Wan E), William Warren, Dr John Jeremiah Bigsby and the seventeen signators of the Robinson Huron Treaty, all of whose stories appear beside the portraits of the rocks; all of whom wrote home.”

Bonnie Devine, a member of the Serpent River Ojibway First Nation in Northern Ontario, is an artist, curator, writer and educator. Her primary interests are installation and sculpture and the development of contemporary Aboriginal culture. They are central to her art practice and teaching career and inform her work as an independent curator. Her most recent exhibitions include BadLand at the IAIA Museum, Santa Fe, NM; Medicine River at AxeNeo7, Gatineau, QC; and Writing Home at Gallery Connexion, Fredericton, NB. Devine’s latest curatorial project, The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibtion, finished it’s tour at the National Gallery of Canada. Devine studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design and York University.

Nowruz (نوروز meaning 'New Day') is the traditional and ancient Iranian festival and the first day of Iranian "New Year". Nowruz also marks the first day of Spring and rebirth of nature. Being with family, gift-giving, setting a symbolic haft-sin table, spring cleaning, visiting elders and relatives, and picnics in nature are among the traditions observed by many Iranians on this day.

Martha Mazzoleni, born in Montevideo, Uruguay started harp lessons at age four. By age nine she was a pupil of master harpist, Venicio Godoy from Paraguay. In her career, Martha has performed at leading theatres in Montevideo and made appearances on radio and TV. She also represented the Paraguayan and Chilean embassies. In Canada, Martha has performed at many festivals and events, and also at the Lula Lounge.

Join by The Martha Mazzoleni Ensemble, the evening's repertoire includes music from Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina and other Latin American countries. For this performance, we are pleased to have as special guest: vocalist Adis Rodriguez from Cienfuegos, Cuba.

The Paraguayan harp is the national instrument of Paraguay, and similar instruments are used elsewhere in South America. It is a diatonic harp with 32, 36, 38 or 40 strings. Made from tropical wood with an exaggerated neck arch, it is played with the fingernails.

What is Filk?

. . . A subject of some argument: ongoing, loud and opinionated argument at that.

The easy answer is that it is science fiction folk music, which may explain nothing! Okay, so it's music based on themes in science fiction and/or fantasy writing; or on the space program, modern technology, computers, cats, food... or just about any subject people in SF fandom like to talk about.

It's also primarily "folk"-ish in style: mostly the lyrics are important and have something to say that is worth hearing. But the musical style may be anything from "trad" to last week's top of the chart. Not surprisingly, there is a strong influence of popular music.

In Southern Ontario the quality of filk thus far is pretty high and we're proud of our local filk community, aka UFO.

Like our brilliant colleagues in Lillehammer, we are aiming for a hundred panels, workshops, roundtables and plenary conferences. Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta talks about her book, Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation, which presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence. The vast majority are either Palestinian or Israeli reflecting on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations, both in separate and in joint initiatives.

Copies of a special early paperback edition will be available for purchase (commercial paperback not available until late 2010).

White's film, Refusing to be Enemies: The Zeitouna Story is a 58-minute documentary about a group of twelve women living in Michigan calling themselves “Zeitouna,” the Arabic word for "olive tree." Six Palestinians and six Jews, "some of the women are American-born, others are immigrants; one is a Holocaust survivor, another is a survivor of the Nakbah’s terror; their ages span 40 years. Filmmaker Laurie White is a founding member of Zeitouna. The film does not attempt to answer questions of right and wrong, or how to break the deadlock of the Middle East conflict. Instead it offers living proof of how the journey of personal transformation may pave the way to socio-political transformation and peace."

Marvel at the beauty of original art wall hangings by Artesania Sorata, a well-known fair trade cooperative based in La Paz, Bolivia. Now over 25 years old, the group has a workshop in La Paz, working almost exclusively with alpaca wool. Artisans spin the wool by hand and use vibrant natural dyes for all materials used in the wall hangings.

The wall hangings depict rural scenes, using the Andes mountains as the backdrop of daily life of the indigenous people. The hangings express both the honest simplicity of agrarian life as well as the indigenous belief that they are stewards of Mother Earth.

Using bold alpaca stitching to depict vegetation and appliqué techniques to create the mountainous terrain, each piece is an original work of art. The rich dyes express a breathtaking vibrancy.
