Silver of the Stars
Silver of the Stars is a stunning collection of contemporary silver created for some of the biggest names in film, music, fashion, theatre and literature. Based on the theme "a drink with a close friend," 10 celebrities, including Sir Sean Connery, Robbie Coltrane and Ewan McGregor, paired up with Scottish silversmiths to create elaborate drinking vessels. The finished silverworks -- and accompanying stories -- range from the stylish to the amusing: fashion designer Alexander McQueen's dream is to share a goblet of absinthe with Cate Blanchett, while comedian Billy Connolly pictures himself drinking tea with God.

Seven Days From A Gaza Diary, A Reading
Inaugural Event at New Toronto Art and Culture Venue - Beit Zatoun
A dramatic reading of a searing, personal account of bombing of Gaza

This performance piece for three voices is adapted from a diary kept during the Israeli assault on Gaza in December 2008 into January 2009. The diarist is Khulood Ghanem, a 27 year-old woman living in Khan Younis in central Gaza. Written in Arabic, the first seven days were translated into rough but clear English by the diarist.

This adaptation employs half the diary text for those seven days. Interspersed are excerpts selected by Mr. Mast from published reports issued during the last year by respected information sources or human rights organizations.

By donation - suggested $20; unwaged $5

Relief, Occupations and the Haiti Crisis: Canada/US policy and the regional response
A public forum with with Justin Podur and Dan Freeman-Maloy.

On January 12, Haiti was hit with an earthquake 7.0 on the Richter scale, leaving possibly 200,000 dead and 3 million affected. Much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, is now living in makeshift camps with their water, food, and health at risk. While many countries around the world responded with aid, the US and Canada also quickly deployed troops.
This talk will discuss current events and press coverage in the context of the past decade of Western policy towards Haiti, as well as the prospects for constructive relief and solidarity work.

Justin Podur is Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at York University and a member of the Pueblos en Camino Collective. He visited Haiti in 2005 to study the UN occupation and the government after the 2004 coup.

Dan Freeman-Maloy is a Toronto-based activist and writer. He studied Canadian media coverage of the 2004 Haiti coup and has written for ZNet and other publications.

Celebrating the 5th Anniversary of Non-Violent Resistance in Bil'in in the West Bank
Since 2005, the people of Bil'in, a farming village in the West Bank, have been demonstrating non-violently against the ever-expanding illegal Israeli settlements and the separation wall which encroaches on and divides their land. The village has organized weekly protests with active participation from both Israeli and international peace activists and has become an internationally celebrated symbol of non-violent resistance.

The Israeli occupation forces have been trying to destroy the resistance with a series of night raids targeting the leaders of the village, as well as ordinary residents as young as 14 years old.

One of the people arrested, Abdallah Abu Rahmah, a schoolteacher from Bil'in wrote from his prison: No army, no prison and no wall can stop us.
We will be there in solidarity with the people of Bil'in and the Palestinian people in their quest for human dignity and self-determination- Palestinians, Jews and others. We say as well we refuse to be enemies.

February 5th 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of the non-violent action in Bil'in and we will be celebrating this on that day by having a lively action in front of the Israeli consulate at 180 Bloor St W. From 5 to 6pm.

LAB Profile Practitioner Program
The ability to influence people is an essential business and life skill. This certification program will enable you to detect motivation triggers in others and teach you the language to maximize your impact and get results. Learn from the best-selling author of “Words that Change Minds”, Shelle Rose Charvet.

Every day, in every situation, people communicate through their own thinking and motivation patterns. As humans, we respond immediately when someone "speaks our language" to communicate with us in return.

The Language and Behavior Profile (LAB Profile) is a way of thinking about people and groups that allows us to notice and respond with just the right Influencing Language. It's tailored to each situation and structured to allow us to understand how people get motivated; how they process information; and how they make decisions.

Urban Shaman Gallery Exhibition: Being Unwritten
Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Marvin Francis Media Gallery presents

Becoming Unwritten by artist John Hupfield

Artist Statement:

daapin ezhi-bmaadziwaad mtigook – Take the life of the trees

daapinan ezhi-bmaadiziimgak nwewin – Take the life of the language

daapinan zhitwaawinan – Take the life of the ceremonies

An exploration of loss and gain, of taking away and of picking up, can we ever really reclaim the things lost to us before being born into this world? Using stop-frame animation, digital images and digital video, the ebb and flow of language and culture as witnessed by a young anishinaabe man comes to the fore, John Hupfield is Becoming Unwritten.

John Hupfield is a writer, filmmaker and member of the hip hop-spoken word collective Red Slam. Born of mixed Dutch/English/Anishinaabe heritage and a member of Wasauksing First Nation, Hupfield uses new media - digital video, animation, sound/music software - to situate himself in the world and engage society with the agency of his indigenous roots. Recently completing a New Media Residency at OBORO in partnership with NIMAC, Hupfield has screened work at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival in Toronto and the Weeneebeg Film Festival in Moose Factory. His shorts “Clear Cut” and “Birch Bark” were both selected for imagineNATIVE’s Northern Tour in 2006 and 2009.

Urban Shaman Gallery Exhibition: Writing Home
Urban Shaman: Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Main Gallery presents

Writing Home the art of Bonnie Devine, curated by Faye Heavyshield

Curatorial Statement:

“In this work Devine remodels the act of ‘writing home’ into an actualization of her correspondence with home, specifically Serpent River. Through photographs, sound, and impressions cast in glass, the artist presents her home, replete in texture and history. Writing and text have always figured in Devine’s practice; words and their meanings, their ‘look’ on the surface of the paper akin to the stitching of red thread on a white surface. The stitches become legible as memory and the handwritten letters are missives to her place in this landscape. Each of the components in this body of work is indicative of the immersive process the artist employs with her material and medium. In this way “Writing Home” merges absence and presence… words become threads and the rock transformed into the lens of glass remains the rock.”

“Drawing with and from rock, Devine gives us privy to a conversation of human geography. This is writing and this is home.”

Artist Statement:

“This work began on the rocks of my childhood home. Driving west from Sudbury on Highway 17, tracing the great spine of Lake Huron and crossing the La Cloche Range of ancient mountains, you come into the land of the Ojibwa; Laurentia. You cross over the ancient precipitous place where two continents noisily mated eons ago. And if you are on foot, you wander where their roots remain, exposed in secret places; the trusses and ligatures of the earth. Laurentia.

The rocks tell a story ages old.

Geologists and prospectors saw and read it early on and gouged fathom-deep pits in answer, looking for rare earths and minerals. Everywhere you see their restless scratches. Even as the drawings and peckings, the noble stories of the old Ojibwa, fade and expire under their feet.

The work in this exhibition was created in response to Sandy Wabageshik, Michel Mitch, Andrew Blackbird, William Blackbird (PeTaw Wan E), William Warren, Dr John Jeremiah Bigsby and the seventeen signators of the Robinson Huron Treaty, all of whose stories appear beside the portraits of the rocks; all of whom wrote home.”

Bonnie Devine, a member of the Serpent River Ojibway First Nation in Northern Ontario, is an artist, curator, writer and educator. Her primary interests are installation and sculpture and the development of contemporary Aboriginal culture. They are central to her art practice and teaching career and inform her work as an independent curator. Her most recent exhibitions include BadLand at the IAIA Museum, Santa Fe, NM; Medicine River at AxeNeo7, Gatineau, QC; and Writing Home at Gallery Connexion, Fredericton, NB. Devine’s latest curatorial project, The Drawings and Paintings of Daphne Odjig: A Retrospective Exhibtion, finished it’s tour at the National Gallery of Canada. Devine studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design and York University.

A celebration of Nowrouz and the arrival of Spring

Join us for an intimate performance of classical and folk music from different regions of Iran celebrating Nowruz and the arrival of spring.

Nowruz (نوروز meaning 'New Day') is the traditional and ancient Iranian festival and the first day of Iranian "New Year". Nowruz also marks the first day of Spring and rebirth of nature. Being with family, gift-giving, setting a symbolic haft-sin table, spring cleaning, visiting elders and relatives, and picnics in nature are among the traditions observed by many Iranians on this day.

The Sarv Ensemble (سرو meaning 'Cypress') is devoted to playing traditional Persian music. Its members are experienced professional performers and teachers of traditional Iranian music and love to work together, practice, and share this music.

The Sarv Ensemble is:
Shahin Fayyaz (Tar, Robab)
Kousha Nakhaie (Kamanche)
Parisa Ferdousian (Tar)
Araz Pashayee (Tombak, Udo)
Shabnam Sahraie (Daf)

Career Transition Groups for Digital Media Professionals
Career Transition Groups are structured, 5-week workshops designed to help media professionals generate focus, momentum and action during career transition. Whether concentrating on staying in media or considering a new industry path, the program will uncover core competencies, help communicate skills clearly, manage actions efficiently, and create a clear direction for next steps.

The Career Transition Groups are led by media career coach Tonia Mattu, and the series is supplemented by a discussion with digital media recruiter Jeff Lundwall, who will share tips on what recruiters and employers are looking for, and will present effective strategies on how to get on their radar. Upon completion of the program, participants will have an opportunity to present their personal marketing material to the group and will receive feedback on their content and delivery.

The workshops provide a collaborative and supportive learning environment, and utilize a variety of interactive learning methods – group activities, individual assignments and Q&A – to work through the core content that every professional in career transition needs to know.

Annual CMDC Conference
The challenge of breaking through in an increasingly congested media marketplace is the focus of the 2010 Canadian Media Directors’ Council Conference.

The much-anticipated annual event – scheduled for Thursday, April 8 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre – will examine the state of today’s media environment, and the effects of unprecedented media choice, more and more cultural diversity and a seemingly endless supply of new content.

Attendees will hear from some of the industry’s leading thinkers and practitioners about the kinds of media strategies and approaches that advertisers will need to stand out in today’s ultra-competitive world. Opening keynote speaker is Bill Buxton, Principal Researcher for Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft.

“We are in a very challenging period,” says Anne Myers, President of the CMDC and EVP, Managing Director of Starcom MediaVest Group. “With so much available choice, and as consumers continue to redefine the marketing relationship on their own terms, the big questions for communications professionals are how to best gain access to their target audiences and simply – how to break through given all this clutter.”

“The Channel Changers are the ones who will be leading the way,” says CMDC Executive Director Janet Callaghan. “They are the ones who are prepared to take risks and who really understand all the available options. They are the people who, most importantly, aren’t afraid of letting go of the old ways of doing things.”

The 2010 CMDC conference will include presentations and discussions involving more than 20 dynamic industry leaders.

The CMDC Conference is the biggest industry event of the year. It is an opportunity to network with decision and deal-makers, to learn about the latest issues, trends, challenges and opportunities and to gain insights that will help drive businesses forward. The CMDC Conference is a must-attend event for all media and marketing executives.

FilKONtario
What is Filk?

. . . A subject of some argument: ongoing, loud and opinionated argument at that.

The easy answer is that it is science fiction folk music, which may explain nothing! Okay, so it's music based on themes in science fiction and/or fantasy writing; or on the space program, modern technology, computers, cats, food... or just about any subject people in SF fandom like to talk about.

It's also primarily "folk"-ish in style: mostly the lyrics are important and have something to say that is worth hearing. But the musical style may be anything from "trad" to last week's top of the chart. Not surprisingly, there is a strong influence of popular music.

In Southern Ontario the quality of filk thus far is pretty high and we're proud of our local filk community, aka UFO.

The 2010 Annual Conference & Sponsorship Marketing Awards
The recession's heavy wallop -- and the recovery's fitful return to form -- has had a profound impact on the sponsorship marketing industry. Consumers remain guarded about the future, putting new pressures on sponsors and rights-holders alike to demonstrate real value and relevance. "Creating Opportunities" -- the theme of the SMCC's 7th Annual Conference -- will explore how innovation and ingenuity can be harnessed to produce programs and properties that truly engage consumers while realizing a maximum return on sponsorship marketing objectives.
A signature component of the SMCC's Annual Conference is the presentation of the Sponsorship Marketing Awards, created to acknowledge proven performance in sponsorship marketing. This year marks our 6th annual awards celebration.

6th Global Investigative Journalism Conference
Like our brilliant colleagues in Lillehammer, we are aiming for a hundred panels, workshops, roundtables and plenary conferences. We are going to place a focus on the financial and economic crisis and some famous panelists, familiar with the obscure matter of hedge funds and tax havens, have already accepted to be amongst us in 2010.

The investigation in sport stories is also going to be a focus, as we will be just a few months from the football World Cup in South Africa. We are going to take advantage of the fact that major sport organisations have their headquarters in Switzerland, to focus our attention on this sometimes secretive world.

Finally, with many being based in Geneva, we will undoubtedly devote time and attention to international organisations, and namely in the most controversial investigative fields such as human rights and environment.

During this Conference, we are also going to dedicate more room to investigation in television and the net. In addition, as the crisis is hitting all of us very hard, we think it is going to be a must to offer state of the art panels devoted to new business models in investigative journalism, and a few panels to media executives, as many of us are becoming our own boss!

Reading & Film: Refusing to be Enemies
Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta talks about her book, Refusing to be Enemies: Palestinian and Israeli Nonviolent Resistance to the Israeli Occupation, which presents the voices of over 100 practitioners and theorists of nonviolence. The vast majority are either Palestinian or Israeli reflecting on their own involvement in nonviolent resistance and speak about the nonviolent strategies and tactics employed by Palestinian and Israeli organizations, both in separate and in joint initiatives.

Copies of a special early paperback edition will be available for purchase (commercial paperback not available until late 2010).

White's film, Refusing to be Enemies: The Zeitouna Story is a 58-minute documentary about a group of twelve women living in Michigan calling themselves “Zeitouna,” the Arabic word for "olive tree." Six Palestinians and six Jews, "some of the women are American-born, others are immigrants; one is a Holocaust survivor, another is a survivor of the Nakbah’s terror; their ages span 40 years. Filmmaker Laurie White is a founding member of Zeitouna. The film does not attempt to answer questions of right and wrong, or how to break the deadlock of the Middle East conflict. Instead it offers living proof of how the journey of personal transformation may pave the way to socio-political transformation and peace."

Exhibit: Wall Hangings from Bolivia
Reception: Friday May 7, 7pm to 9pm

Exhibit open from May 5 to May 15

Marvel at the beauty of original art wall hangings by Artesania Sorata, a well-known fair trade cooperative based in La Paz, Bolivia. Now over 25 years old, the group has a workshop in La Paz, working almost exclusively with alpaca wool. Artisans spin the wool by hand and use vibrant natural dyes for all materials used in the wall hangings.

The wall hangings depict rural scenes, using the Andes mountains as the backdrop of daily life of the indigenous people. The hangings express both the honest simplicity of agrarian life as well as the indigenous belief that they are stewards of Mother Earth.

Using bold alpaca stitching to depict vegetation and appliqué techniques to create the mountainous terrain, each piece is an original work of art. The rich dyes express a breathtaking vibrancy.

Expereince indigenous Bolivian art and creativity. Indigenous Crafts from Bolivia has been importing alpaca products from Artesania Sorata to North America since 2004.

Brand Innovation Conference
The theme of this year’s conference is “Igniting a Brand Movement.” How are some brands able to spark a brand movement—an emotional connection with their customers that generates a level of fervor, passion and advocacy? Think Nike and Harley-Davidson and more recently Southwest Airlines. A brand movement is defined by a brand’s personality and set of values, and provides a rallying cry for customers who actively express their affinity for the brand. This event will showcase real-world examples, insights, and lessons from client-side marketers who are building their own brand movements, covering such issues as:

* attracting customers to actively engage with your brand and promote it to others
* defining a higher purpose for your brand that is both inspirational and motivating
* building a community for the brand
* making adjustments given economic conditions

Learn tips and techniques to create your own brand movement!

Emergency Picket Today May 31- 5:00 - 7:00 pm outside Israeli Consulate in Toronto
Israel has used military force on the peaceful flotilla taking humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel has murdered several unarmed civilians (at least 10 confirmed so far). Again we see the Israeli apartheid state acting with full impunity outside the boundaries of international law while the Harper government welcomes Prime Minister Netanyahu with open arms.

We will be out today to tell Israel and all its supporters it can not get away with its crimes against humanity without worldwide protest.

Bring noise makers! Bring flags! Tell your family and friends.

SMX Advanced Seattle
SMX Advanced is the only search marketing conference designed exclusively for experienced internet marketers. Sessions are fast-paced, Q&A-packed, frequently controversial, always informative…and don’t stop to cover the basics. Fluent in search engine marketing? Come to SMX Advanced and engage with others who speak your native language.

And there will be plenty of learning and sharing. The most accomplished search marketers in the world will present cutting edge tips for driving traffic and increasing conversions from paid search advertising, SEO, social media marketing, search analytics and more.

Matt Cutts

Google software engineer Matt Cutts will make a return appearance at SMX Advanced Seattle. He’ll participate in an always popular and engaging "You&A" format keynote, an unscripted conversation with you and others in the audience.

Finally, SMX Advanced is intentionally intimate, so you’ll be certain to meet the people you want to meet. This conference sold out in good times and bad each of the three years since it started in 2007. We could relocate and sell more tickets, but the ingredients — the content, networking, and energy — are too precisely formulated to change.

Tottenham Bluegrass Festival
Nestled in the heart of the Village on a 100 acre farm formerly owned by the Abrams Family, the Tottenham Conservation Area provides the perfect setting for our Festival. The natural ampitheatre surrounding the beach provides the only venue large enough to hold this music, the outdoors. Weekend visitors will appreciate the comforts of our campground, from the manicured lawns of the rough camping (included with a weekend ticket) to the fully serviced lots. All with garbage, shower and sanitary facilities serviced around the clock. The swimming at the sandy beach on the pond can be most inviting on a hot day and we're told that a wee trout or two could be had late in the evening or early in the morning. Over the years our constant attention to security has meant that everyone can enjoy their weekend in a safe, restful family atmosphere.

Toronto Community Day of Action
Justice for our Communities!
No to G8/G20! Yes to Taking Back our City
Rally. March. Block Party. Tent City.
From June 25th and 27th, 2010, the world’s twenty richest countries (the G8 and G20) will send their ruling elite, along with heads of the IMF and World Bank, to meet in Huntsville and then in Toronto, to talk exploitation, wealth, and greed.
These ‘leaders’ have shredded the public sector and social spending, criminalized the poor, immigrants and racialized communities, continued to plunder Indigenous lands and trash the environment, deported our families and friends, gutted the unions, and closed hospitals and schools while they grant tax cuts to the rich and corporations and boost police and military budgets. These disgusting policies have enacted devastation around the world and are reflected right here in Toronto.

Peace Rally at the G8/G20 Summit
Troops out of Afghanistan NOW!
Money for Human Needs - Not for War
Join the peace rally at the G8/G20 meetings in Toronto
The Canadian Peace Alliance is calling on peace groups and individuals to join us for a rally and march during the G20 meetings on June 26th. We will be meeting at a rally organized by our friends in the labour, environmental and social justice movements at Queens Park for a mass march through downtown Toronto.
The G20 countries are some of the biggest arms dealers in the world, responsible for more than 85 per cent of global military spending and 95 per cent of global arms production. They will spend $1.2 trillion on the military this year. The CPA is demanding this money be re-allocated for food, education, green jobs, environmental programs, health-care and to improve the lives of the people of the world.
Poverty and environmental degradation are chief causes of conflict in the world. Spending massive amounts on the military, rather than addressing the root causes of conflict is wasteful and counter-productive. True security comes when the people of the world can meet their basic needs for a happy, healthy life.
It is time for the people to stand up to the G20 war mongers. Join us to raise the voice of peace at the G20 meetings this June.
For CPA members groups in Eastern Canada, please make every effort to join us in Toronto. For those groups that are unable to make it to the main rally we request that you organize solidarity actions in your region.
